Below are some additional herbs and natural compounds that have shown promise in anti-aging therapy.

Astragalus is a plant native to Asia and includes appoximately 2000 relatives in its genus. Astragalus Membranaceus is the variety typically used in alternative medicine. It is thought to be an immune system enhancer, cellular protector and potent antioxidant. Longevity enthusiasts are interested in an extract of Astragalus called Astragaloside IV. This extract is currently being manufactured by a handful of companies. Like resveratrol, Astragaloside IV has been tested in-vitro in a number of different studies (see pubmed.gov) and shown promising results. No independent human testing has been completed. Astragaloside IV is being touted by manufacturers as a telomere maintaining and lengthening agent. Telomeres, the protective caps on human chromosomes, are thought to be a key component in the human aging process and become progressively shorter as we age.

Carnosine is a form of amino acid normally found in muscle tissue. Studies have shown Carnosine to have potent antioxidant as well as a antiglycation and metal chelating properties. AGE's can cause DNA damage which Carnosine can prevent. AGEs are thought to increase the risk and diseases including the metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, arthritis, Alzheimer's Disease, and cancer. Carnosine is considered by may to be an important part of an anti-aging regimine.

Benfotiamine is a derivative of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Benfotiamine is an effective AGE agent and has reduced AGE's in humans by as much as 40% in a German study. Like Carnosine, Benfotiamine is used by many as a part of an anti-aging regimine.

Purslane is grown as a pot-herb in many countries. It is also considered an invasive weed. Aside from being extremely rich in nutrients including fatty acids, Purslane may also have immune stimulating, antioxidant and potentially telomere enhancing properties (see pubmed.gov).

Chlorella is a fresh water single celled green algae. Chlorella is very nutritious, contains up to 45% protein (complete) and is a good source of fatty acids. Chlorella also contains more plant RNA/DNA that most other sources as well as a spectrum of vitamins. Chlorella is an immune stimulator and an excellent chelator of heavy metals. Chlorella can aid in the body's natural repair process. In vitro studies in animals indicate that Chlorella may help prevent many diseases.

Spirulina is produced from a form of cyanobacteria. Spirulina is used as a food source for people and animals across the world. Spirulina is a complete protein containing all essential amino acids. Spirulina also contains a number of essential fatty acids. Spirulina has immuno-stimulating, antiviral, antioxidant, blood pressure and cholesterol lowering levels as well as other purported properties.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is found in every cell of the body. We use it to convert sugar (glucose) into energy. ALA is a potent antioxidant, scavenging free radicals throughout the body. ALA may be able to help the body get more use out of existing antioxidants like vitamin C, E and glutathione. Brain function and other age related conditions may also benefit from ALA supplementation due to its free radical scavenging properties.

Turmeric has long been used as a culinary and medicinal ingredient. Today, in-vitro and some in-vivo studies have confirmed turmerics effectiveness as a potent anti-inflammatory.
